Today, Piraeus is a lively port city with activities that will please all its visitors. Piraeus offers an increasing variety of places and events to enjoy on your free time, whether you are visiting, pacing through, or just simply waiting to catch a ferry boat to one of the nume
rous islands you can correspond to. The city is filled with cafes in which you can enjoy a morning coffee, an afternoon juice, or an evening drink. Along with its numerous cafes, Piraeus has a large number of bars at which both Athenian and Piraeus residents attend in order to enjoy a night of dancing and socializing. These cafes and bars can be found practically in every corner of Piraeus but are mostly concentrated in the heart of the city, at Kastella hill, and at the Pasalimani. The city also offers a large number of hotels ranging from two to four stars along with its various “internet cafes” in which people can be found booking imminent boat tickets or simply surfing online. Piraeus is also famous for its various clubs, discos, rock clubs, and “Rebetadika” hangouts at which traditional Greek music is being performed. If you are looking to experience the way in which Modern Greek music is being expressed, then the places to visit are the “Bouzoukia”. Piraeus also offers a large number of cinemas and theaters along with its several art galleries. Numerous restaurants and taverns can be easily found in the Piraeus vicinity. Taste the best of what the Greek cousin has to offer and take advanta
ge of a variety of fresh fish being served. As with practically every major Greek city; Piraeus has several museums to accompany its vast history. These are the “Archeological Museum”, the “Maritime Museum of Greece”, and the “Piraeus Museum”. Piraeus also offers all the year round, but especially in the summer, the best circumstances to attend various kinds of Sport. Windsurfing, Sailing and fishing are just some of them. The traveler could get involved with Football (soccer), Basketball, Volleyball or Tennis. Stadiums and fields for these sports can be found easily, since t
hese sports are very popular amongst the Greek inhabitants. With the “Athens Summer Olympics of 2004” the number of these sport attractions increased significantly, along with the city’s transportation system. These new transportation systems included not only new highways connecting Athens and Piraeus with the Athens International Airport, but also the creation of the Athenian “Tram” (streetcar) connecting down town Athens (Syndagma square) with Piraeus and several suburbs extending further east of the port city.
