Piraeus, today

Today, Piraeus is a lively port city with activities that will please all its visitors. Piraeus offers an increasing variety of places and events to enjoy on your free time, whether you are visiting, pacing through, or just simply waiting to catch a ferry boat to one of the numerous islands you can correspond to. The city is filled with cafes in which you can enjoy a morning coffee, an afternoon juice, or an evening drink. With the “Athens Summer Olympics of 2004” the number of these sport attractions increased significantly, along with the city’s transportation system. These new transportation systems included not only new highways connecting Athens and Piraeus with the Athens International Airport, but also the creation of the Athenian “Tram” (streetcar) connecting down town Athens (Syndagma square) with Piraeus and several suburbs extending further east of the port city.
